How Long A Rechargeable Fan Really Runs When The Light Goes

Two fans claim the same battery and one dies at 2am while the other is still turning at dawn. The difference is the motor, not the battery. Here are the real hours.

Quick answer. Two rechargeable fans with the same advertised battery can differ by three times in real runtime, because runtime is set by how much current the motor draws, not by the battery alone. A brushless motor on speed one will run most of the night. A cheap brushed motor on speed three will not reach 2am. Ask for the motor type and the current draw, not just the mAh.

The moment this matters

Eleven at night, the light goes, and the room is already warm. The children are asleep. You switch the fan to the speed that actually moves air, and you go to bed hoping. At two in the morning somebody is awake and crying because the fan stopped an hour ago. You bought a fan advertised at 20,000mAh. It should have lasted. It did not.

Runtime is a division, and most people are only told the top half

The arithmetic is simple and nobody prints it on the box:

Hours = battery capacity divided by current draw.

The box gives you the capacity. It almost never gives you the draw. So you are handed the numerator and asked to guess the denominator, and the denominator is where all the variation lives.

A 16 inch rechargeable fan with a cheap brushed motor typically pulls around 20 to 26 watts on its top speed. The same size fan with a brushless DC motor pulls roughly 8 to 12 watts for a similar amount of air. Same battery, and one of them empties it in less than half the time.

What we measured

In July 2026 we ran two 16 inch rechargeable fans of the same claimed 20,000mAh capacity from full charge until they stopped, in a room at normal Accra night temperature.

The brushless fan on speed one covered a full night with hours to spare. The brushed fan on speed three did not reach 2am, which is exactly the failure people describe.

Three things that decide your real hours

  • Motor type. Brushless DC is the single biggest factor. It is usually stated as “BLDC” or “DC motor” and it is worth paying for.
  • The speed you actually use. Dropping from speed three to speed one roughly doubles your night. Most rooms only need speed one once the air is moving.
  • Whether the light is on. The built-in LED panel on many of these fans is not free. Running it all night can cost you an hour or more.

The honest limitation

A rechargeable fan is a fan, not an inverter. It will not run a fridge, and it will not run all night on top speed no matter what the box says. If you need a whole room cooled through a long outage, you are looking at a different class of product and a different budget. We would rather tell you that now than sell you a disappointment.

What to ask before you buy

Ask three questions and you cannot go far wrong: is the motor brushless, what is the runtime on speed one, and does that figure include the light. If a seller cannot answer, they have not measured it.

Check it before you pay

At your door, before money: check the fan arrives charged enough to switch on, run it on each speed, and listen. A brushless motor is noticeably quieter and steadier. If it rattles or the speeds barely differ, do not pay.
