Quick answer. You have about two minutes at the door and four checks that matter: the box seal, the plug and cable, the item against what you were told, and a five second power test. Do them in that order. If any one fails, do not pay. Pay on delivery only protects you if you actually use it.
The moment this matters
The rider calls from the gate. You come out, he hands you a box, and there is a small social pressure to just pay and go back inside. That pressure is exactly what a careless seller relies on. Two minutes of checking is the difference between a good purchase and a thing you regret for two years.
The four checks, in order
1. The box and the seal, ten seconds
Look for a factory seal, not tape that has been reapplied. Look for crushing at the corners. A resealed box does not automatically mean a bad item, but it means you check the contents harder before deciding.
2. The plug and cable, twenty seconds
This one is Ghana specific and it catches a lot of people. Your wall socket is Type G, the rectangular three pin. Anything arriving with a two pin European plug was built for a different market and will need an adapter, which is a fire risk on a heat appliance drawing real current.
Then run the cable through your fingers from plug to body. You are feeling for a joint, a lump of tape, or a section that feels thinner. A repaired cable on a new item means it is not new.
3. The item against what you were told, forty seconds
Take out your phone and read back the message. Model, size, capacity, colour, what was included. Check each one against the thing in your hands. A 1.8L kettle is not a 2L kettle. A blender that was described with a dry mill should have the dry mill cup in the box.
This is why we put the exact specification in the WhatsApp message rather than a vague product name. It gives you something to check against.
4. The five second power test, thirty seconds
Plug it in and switch it on. Do not run a kettle dry or a blender loaded, just prove it powers up and the motor or element responds.
- Motors should start smoothly and settle to a steady note. A rattle or a note that wanders means a bearing or an unbalanced fan.
- Heating elements should draw immediately. On a kettle you hear the water note begin within a few seconds.
- Batteries should show a charge indicator. A rechargeable fan or lamp that arrives completely flat cannot be tested, so treat that as a reason to wait.
The four sentences that make this easy
Most people find the checking socially awkward rather than difficult. So use plain words and stay friendly. “Let me just open it small.” “Let me check the plug.” “Let me put it on for a second.” “This one is not what we agreed, so I will not take it today.”
A rider carrying a genuine item has no problem with any of that. Reluctance is itself information.

And if the item is not what we said, you do not pay and the rider takes it back. No argument, no deposit lost.
That policy costs us money on the rare occasions it happens. It is worth it, because the alternative is a market where nobody trusts anybody and everybody pays a little more to cover the risk.
One thing to avoid
Do not pay in advance for a discount. A price that is only available if you send money first is not a discount. It is the whole risk moving from the seller to you, priced at a few cedis.
